Introduction to WTMC

The Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC) is a collective effort of Dutch scholars studying the development of science,

technology and modern culture. The history, sociology and philosophy of science and technology—Science and Technology Studies (STS)—form the core of its work, but there

are also strong inputs from cultural studies and innovation studies. The School aims to:

(1) stimulate and coordinate high quality research in the field of STS

(2) provide high quality advanced training for PhD candidates in STS, and thus to create new generations of scholars with a solid background in this field

(3) enhance the societal significance and visibility of STS

WTMC started as a network in 1986, and was officially accredited as an interuniversity graduate research school by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences

(KNAW) in 1995. Accreditation has been reconfirmed in 2000, and in 2005.

The academic scientific director of the Graduate School is Prof. Dr. Sally Wyatt. The coordinators are Dr Willem Halffman and Dr. Teun Zuiderent-Jerak.

Prof. Dr. Nelly Oudshoorn chairs the board.
