What previous participants have said about WTMC Dissertation Days:
'I liked best the quality and usefulness of the feedback given/received'
'the senior commentators gave very good comments that were useful for all of us and not just the one person whose chapter was being discussed'
'Perfect. Good atmosphere, high quality cuisine...'
'Excellent format. Great reviewers, very useful day, Thanks!'
On 11 November 2009, WTMC will organize a D-day (Dissertation Day) for those WTMC members who are in the final phase of their PhD (in other words, who have completed all of the workshops and summer schools and are in their last two years). There will be a maximum of 6 participants. This is your chance, not only to receive comprehensive comments on your own work, but also to read work by your fellow PhD students. By carefully reading the work of others in order to give feedback you can learn a lot about writing.
For those of you who have never attended a Dissertation Day, this is what happens: each participant sends in a chapter or article from his/her PhD manuscript. It must be work-in-progress (i.e. not already published). These must be sent to Marjatta (u.m.kemppainen@utwente.nl) by 2 October 2009. She will then copy and collate all of the chapters/articles and send them to participants prior to the meeting so that everyone has time to read all of the chapters.
During the meeting, each participant very briefly introduces her/his work. Two discussants then provide comments –a fellow participant and a senior scholar. The author has an opportunity to respond to these comments before the discussion is opened to everyone. Each paper is discussed for a total of 45-55 minutes. The day is chaired by one or both of the co-ordinators, Willem Halffman and/or Sally Wyatt.
Depending on the number of participants, the Dissertation Day will last from 10 until 6, and will be followed by dinner (paid for by WTMC). Dinner is usually finished by 8.30 pm.
On this occasion, the Dissertation Day is being held in Amsterdam so that participants can easily combine it with attending the WTMC Annual Meeting on 12-13 November (for further information about this, please contact Hannie Spronck – hannie.spronck@maastrichtuniversity.nl).
To reserve your place, please complete the attached registration form and mail it to Marjatta Kemppainen: u.m.kemppainen@utwente.nl by 30 June 2009.
